Greetings!

These quotes are thought provoking. Any one of them can be a lesson, a meditation or at the very least a great conversation starter.

Enjoy!

Govern thyself then you will be able to govern the world. Anonymous

Self-discipline begins with the mastery of your thoughts. If you don’t control what you think, you can’t control what you do. Simply, self-discipline enables you to think first and act afterward. Napoleon Hill

I count him braver who overcomes his desires than him who conquers his enemies; for the hardest victory is over self. Aristotle

The happiness of a man in this life does not consist in the absence but in the mastery of his passions. Alfred Lord Tennyson

Self respect is the root of discipline: The sense of dignity grows with the ability to say no to oneself. Abraham Joshua

In reading the lives of great men, I found that the first victory they won was over themselves… self-discipline with all of them came first.
Harry S. Truman
Rule your mind or it will rule you. Horace

Mastering others is strength. Mastering yourself is true power. Lao Tzu

He who cannot obey himself will be commanded. That is the nature of living creatures. Friedrich Nietzsche

Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment.
Jim Rohn

Ultimately, the only power to which man should aspire is that which he exercises over himself. Elie Wiesel

Most powerful is he who has himself in his own power. Seneca

Discipline really means our ability to get ourselves to do things when we don’t want to. Arden Mahlberg

…And I believe the real mastery is to choose to WANT to do those things you once didn’t want to do IF they need to be done. Fall in love with the process and the means to that end you so desire.

Have a magnificent weekend!
Wishing you peace, joy, light and love,

Hi there self-disciplined people!

Yesterday we referenced that Aristotle quote about creating habits of excellence by what you DO each day.

Today I’d like you to consider what you THINK each day. You will get some great insights into why you do what you do from knowing the pattern of your thoughts and where they lead.

As I thought of this the book The Ant and the Elephant: Leadership For the Self by Vince Poscente occurred to me. This book title conjures up a powerful metaphor which the author explores.

Here’s the metaphor: Imagine an ant sitting on top of an elephant. Got that image?

Now, consider this. Your conscious thoughts and actions are like the ant and the unconscious and subconscious thoughts, beliefs, fears, actions, etc…those are represented by the ELEPHANT.This is how humans operate. Our job is to access our elephant as best we can. Speak to that elephant as best we can.

When we do a thing, there’s a lot that exist beneath the visible act that we DON”T consciously think about or know about. You can be doing all the right things but your thoughts – conscious and otherwise are not supporting your desired outcomes.

The proverbial “tip of the iceberg” speaks to this same phenomenon.

Becoming more conscious then is essential if we hope to change habits, create new ones or maintain excellent ones.

Beyond more consciousness we also need to find ways to access and speak to our sub-conscious mind…which is where the beliefs [some very self-limiting] and bad habits have their roots. [affirmations are wonderful in this regard]Starting with our thoughts, we can begin to access buried emotions, patterns and beliefs.

Here’s what I suggest:

1) Be MORE AWARE than usual of your thoughts today – Do they support your efforts? Are they doubtful? Are they inspirational, mostly optimistic or mostly pessimistic? Is there a recurring theme? Or phrase? Are you extremely hard on yourself and say things to yourself that you wouldn’t say to someone you love? [negative self-talk is one super powerful way to sabotage yourself - it's done ALL THE TIME]

2) Record some of your thoughts – as often as possible...Pay particular attention to those that seem to ‘pop up’ out of no where. Or those that lead to negative or positive feelings. Follow the dots of thoughts and emotions and check out where you go.

3) Try becoming completely silent – no thoughts, just presence.

4) Do your daily actions as usual

5) Think of how you will celebrate in some small yet significant way on Sunday – the completion of 10 WHOLE DAYS of this journey. (12 counting the 2 days of planning)

IF WE HOPE TO BECOME DISCIPLINED IN OUR ACTIONS —- OUR THOUGHTS WILL HAVE TO BE EQUALLY DISCIPLINED….so let’s go a little deeper as we create a truly powerful habit.

Let’s add a #6 — Recall the affirmations you created about being self-disciplined? If you didn’t before, post them where you can see them.

Repeating these affirmations a minimum of 20 times a day will address any contrary beliefs you might have buried in your subconscious. Speak them as often as possible. Out loud.I am a SELF-DISCIPLINED person and I love Being in right ORDER

Wishing you ABUNDANT success, joy, peace and light

The following message was sent to the participants of the 75 Days of Action Challenge on Facebook.

Hi Everyone!

I hope you’re doing well and enjoying your self immensely!

Let me just apologize to all of you who have reached out personally – well first, thank you for your kind comments, gratitude and questions. The apology is due because my responses have been slow due to the quantity of inquiries. I appreciate each message and will personally respond as soon as possible.

For today… Oh – first let me share what Nina said on the event wall… one of my most favorite quotes…

Nina Curtis (Los Angeles, CA) wrote
at 9:53am yesterday
We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit.~Aristotle.

Let our self discipline create our habits and our habits create our Excellence… Wishing everyone an ‘Excellent’ day!
In Light,
Nina
—————————————————————————————

What are you repeatedly doing? If you are doing those activities – symbolic and challenging ones – on a daily basis those are the habits you are creating and the source of your excellence.

If you are inconsistent,THAT is the habit you are creating or reinforcing. Inconsistency.

What ever it is you do on a regular, daily basis, there you will find your habits.

For today…

1) Ponder the above

2) Consider the past 8 days of self-discipline and ask yourself: “What have I done with the space created in my life?” What space you ask?

Well, as you do things in their right order, first things first (a spiritual principle I honor) your life will naturally become more ordered and organized. Being self-disciplined brings order to your day, even if in just one area of your life at first. Self-disciplined people become more organized and begin to take more ordered actions.

Space will be created in your day, in your physical space, in your mind, in your emotions…and my question to you is this – “what have you done with that increased space?”

Have you created more ideas, products, conversations, internal peace, needed “confrontations,” money, joy, time, clearance of clutter, associations, etc, etc?

And with those creations, what have you done? Are you using what you are gaining to move yourself closer to your bigger and bolder goals? Are you helping others?

Remember — our goal with this program is to empower ourselves so we can impact the world.

3) How will you use your increased self-discipline to improve and impact the world? [in this question, "the world" is all that is outside of you]

4) Continue with daily actions…no skipping of days. If you have skipped a day, it’s important to start over at day 1 and go for 21 DAYS consistently.

This is IF you’re trying to create a new habit, the foundation of your excellence.

5) Write in your journal about questions 1,2,3…

Have a fun and exciting day!

Wishing you ABUNDANT success,

Hi there!

This will be a quick message as the day is packed!!

Suggested Activities:

1) Reflect on this - who is the most self-disciplined person you know and what did you/do you learn from them about being a disciplined person.

2) Reflect some more - who is the least self-disciplined person you know and what did you/do you learn from them about (not) being a disciplined person.

3) Select a person and have a conversation with them about why self-discipline is essential for success and happiness. If this is impossible, write an article/essay/journal entry about the topic.

4) Of course, do your symbolic and challenging activities…as usual.

Have a magnificent day everyone.

Be kind, Be you,

—————————————————————————————————————————

Hello wonderful self-disciplined people!

Yesterday, I said this in my message to you… “It takes some self-discipline to remain committed to something.”

I knew I’d be revisiting that statement but I didn’t expect to do it so soon. A conversation I just had with someone convinced me to address it TOday.

She said to me with such an incredulous tone “but what you’re telling me to do is the thing I can’t do yet!”

I said, “I know it looks like that, but don’t be fooled by your own hype.”

Let me explain. (I wonder how many of you considered this “contradiction”)

If it takes self-discipline to remain committed and self-discipline is the very thing we’re trying to grow, how do we actually create this habit?

It seems we need to have it before we have it! Do you see the built-in dilemma?

Here’ how I think about it: I believe when we set out to grow or create a habit…that very desire, thought and interest is a statement of success. [As you clicked ‘will attend’ or whatever it says, you demonstrated the self-discipline within.]

You already have the thing in you…it just may not be fully manifested as yet. [Or, its manifestation is inconsistent. Or, it’s fully manifested and you just wanted to practice it with others…keeping the blade sharp DOES require frequent sharpening!]

In general, we tend to block our gifts, wisdom and blessings by overlaying our past mistakes, unresolved issues and limiting beliefs right on top…and below too (!)… our true essence.

We use our memories and stories and drama to hide from our true selves.

So yes, you do need some amount of self-discipline to stay the course as we grow the self-discipline muscle.

But you have what you need to do this!

This is one of the most wonderful truths of being human. We complicate things and place ourselves in the way of our progress. We have what we need but convince ourselves otherwise.

I address you as ‘self-disciplined people’ not being simply optimistic or cutesy. I honestly believe that you are, already.

We cover up our riches and excellence with stories and issues and “stuff.”

So how do we get out of our own way?
► Be aware of the tendency we each have to stray from our highest and best output.

►Be aware of that tendency to loose interest after the emotional high of a new thing has worn off.

►Be aware of the emotions involved in creating something new. Old habits push back, they want to live on!

►Be aware that these old habits may also “feel” so much more comfortable and safe.

►So be aware of these human conditions and have your response ready.

►KNOW your true potential by staying connected to your source.

►KNOW that you have, already, today, the seed of all greatness within you.

Suggested activities for today:

1)	Read this message at least twice

2) DO what you have committed to do –symbolic and challenging daily actions

3)	Take a look at what was left undone from yesterday and get it done

4)	Write a paragraph about the one habit you have that you know holds you back…

Have a spectacular day!

Oh! I’ve noticed quite a few comments about accountability partners – I suggest you reach out to a person who has indicated interest and inquire…You may be thinking someone will send you a message and they may be thinking the same thing! So reach out, get that connection established. Believe me; it will make ALL the difference in the world.

Wishing you an ABUNDANCE of light and joy through….SELF-DISCIPLINE!!

Peace & love,

Hello wonderful self-disciplined people!

[For anyone joining us late, all previous messages are here: first 5 messages are at the event wall and they are also posted here ► http://bit.ly/1RaMh7 Day 3 ‘s message is here ► Top Ten Self-Discipline Habits to Create ► http://bit.ly/48iQsA ]

Well here it is day 5 of our 21 days of self-discipline! I hope you had a little mini celebration yesterday as suggested. It is good to reward yourself appropriately – just as you would anyone else, as it is deserved and helps with keeping the enthusiasm level where it needs to be to stay in daily action.

It takes some self-discipline to remain committed to something. It does. We discussed this very point at a reading group meeting yesterday…we meet to discuss a great book by Dr. Therman Evans called From Purpose to Promise Driven Life: A Prescription For Making The Difference You Were Born to Make, at 6:45 on Sunday mornings.

THAT takes some serious commitment!

Anyway, as we discussed “commitment” which is the first principle of a ‘promise driven life,’ we acknowledged the challenge of remaining fully engaged from day to day and discussed some approaches that work…writing the goal, visualizing the outcome, knowing your “why” are a few.

Whatever it is what is clear is this: you MUST have a plan for remaining fully engaged. I strongly suggest that you permit yourself to surrender to this process; Honor this process and permit it to work for you. Open your heart and mind to doing what is asked. Engage with the other brilliant participants – PLEASE visit the event wall, the comments there today (and before) were magnificent!! Thank you Nina, thank you Ulla and others…

In terms of specific action steps, here’s what I suggest for today:

1)	Revisit your journal and read those things you wrote before the program began. Read and elaborate where you can.

2)	Re-write your goal, your desired outcomes for this program

3) Sit and visualize – with specific and emotionally charged clarity – how you will BE when you complete this 21 day journey…then

4) Visualize further…on January 23, 2010…how will your life be different? With as much detail as you can muster, imagine and write about how you will personally be better, how will your relationships be impacted? What about your business and family life? Imagine and write with detail. Include pictures, videos and any thing that would bring the visualization to life.

5)	Examine your ‘why.’ Be clear on the benefits…know WHY you are doing this.

6) Write or print at least 3 powerful affirmations connected with your visualization and place them in places where you will see them daily. We MUST speak to our sub-conscious mind if we wish to change what’s going on there.

7)	State these affirmations OUT LOUD as often as you can. Believing is essential to achieving.

Check in with your accountability partner and use this list as a checklist…each of you taking time – and use a timer if needed – to share about your ACTION with these requests.

9) Have you made ANY progress with any of those ‘bad habits’ we looked at earlier? Without working directly with these issues, you should expect to benefit from the constancy of your positive and powerful daily actions…explore the subtle changes and inclinations

10)	Be sure to do both your symbolic and challenging actions…EVERY DAY.

If the challenging action is not something that should be done every single day, make the adjustment BUT be sure to at least think and write about the activity daily.

The symbolic action is daily, no exceptions.

Continue having fun, stay connected and find someone to be kind to today: Someone new.

Spread the joy of your life. It is so joyous, isn’t it, to take charge, get fired up and actually DO something powerful with this life we are granted?

So be grateful and find someone, and pay it forward.

Wishing you an abundance of peace, joy and light,

Hello!

As I wrote a message to the participants of “75 Days of Action Challenge” this morning – this is a facebook event, see details here – the thought occurred:

What are some of the most popular success habits people have worked on with me over the years? I thought you might benefit from knowing this.

Today I asked you to[ request #2]

“Select another thing to do DAILY…this time, let it be something that you KNOW will impact your life tremendously. Discuss with your accountability partner – try SKYPE, btw – but DECIDE today and START TODAY.”

So here’s the top ten list for self-discipline:

Bedtime/Wake-up routine that WORKS. - Going to bed early enough to get up at the time needed to have the day start right is a habit successful people ALWAYS reference as a key to their success. Not only does our bodies and minds REQUIRE adequate sleep and rest, but rising early enough to get those quiet things done impacts the rest of my day every time.

An attitude of gratitude - having a habit of saying and meaning “thank you” throughout your day is powerful. What we are grateful for expands in our life. I’m presently [as it has not always been the case] in the habit of saying thank-you for the challenges as well. The really are tomorrow’s blessings. This has been demonstrated more times than I can count. Thank everybody for everything – not just with words, but with your attitude and actions. Be grateful!

Reading and Learning – being on a continuous quest for knowledge about the world, your self, your “work,” parenting, technology, etc. My pastor suggests committing to learning at least one new thing per day.

Exercise. Need I say more? Whether it’s in the gym, walks or play…all successful people schedule some sort of physical activity that keeps them alive, healthy and well.

Eating well. Another obvious one. Limiting caffeine, alcohol, sugars and general junk food is essential for good health. Good health is an essential aspect of “success.” Successful people understand that their health is directly linked to their creativity, energy level, mindset, emotions and output.

SMILING – yes, smiling:-) . I’ve worked with several people and actually live with one very successful person – my husband, who has worked on “smiling” more as a priority habit. It’s not just about the smile…it’s the spirit of optimism behind it. It’s the commitment to joy and laughter behind it. Optimistic, joyful people produce more and do more. Did the success lead to the smile or the smile to the success? Well a whole book can be written about that one…suffice it to say, if all a person has to smile about is their success, they are anchored to a moving target and are dependent upon outside factors. Not a good thing. Smile easily, frequently, deeply! It’s a tonic for the mind, body and soul. It breeds success.

Be STILL…that would be the habit of PAUSE. As with sentences – can you just imagine this blog without punctuation?! So is a life without stillness and pause and rest. Be still long enough to connect to your source. For me that is God. Successful people know how to tune out and get re-energized. Stillness is the most powerful way to do this. It’s called meditation by some. But don’t get confused with technique, just get still, get present and permit your mind to concede ‘power.’ Thoughts and thinking can really keep a person busy, even when they’re sitting still. The idea is to tune into your deeper source, not your patterned thoughts and self-centered cares.

Deep Breathing. ..which by the way is what you can do when you pause throughout the day. Breath, deep breath is a habit that is MOST understated and underestimated. It’s actually not one that gets mentioned often by folks I coach. But I have to bring it up because it’s pivotal to success. Breathing from your diaphragm is breathing to excel. That’s the kind of breath that pushes the needed substance into our blood stream to our brain. We simply need oxygen and all that’s in it for a reason: LIFE! Ask any high performing athlete or performer, they will tell you about the power of breath.

Patience & Calm. This is the habit to develop if you struggle with anger, intolerance, hasty decisions, dependencies, worry, anxiety, disorganization, and more. Having a habit of patience allows you to remain present – not in the past, full of anxiety and not in the future, full of worry. Of course there are other characteristics and habits that would would need to be developed to support this place of patience and peace. Successful people know what the “small stuff” is and they know how impotent and effective it is to fight against circumstances outside their control. They’re wise.

Forgiveness. Having a habit of letting things go, releasing, not taking offense, not holding on to guilt is most powerful. And of course with this habit and mindset, patience, calm, inner peace, joy, stillness, smiling, gratitude, creativity, kindness, productivity, accountability, self-discipline…all flow naturally and powerfully.

I’m recovering from a serious bout of guilt…and finally self-forgiveness. See my entry here about it.

I know…2, 9 & 10 are not as simple and straightforward as the others…they require more soul searching but you can create specific action steps to build these success habits into your life. As for the others, they each require a commitment that is lasting and anchored to your plan for your life.

These are the habits over the years that people - super successful people – have identified as having the most impact in their lives because they developed the habit of self-discipline and self-mastery. Not just in their business life but in the entire of their life – personal, relationships, community, home life and work life.

These are the self-discipline “watershed habits,” create these and many others will follow.

So look over this list again and tell me if the action you selected to focus on falls into any of these categories. I’d be curious to hear what you are working towards – whether it’s listed here or not. So be in touch.

Wishing you an abundance of peace, joy and light,

As God would have it, I came through the event wall planning to send a very brief message…for today…with a fuller concluding message in a day or so. (I am running from function to function and just would rather not delegate the joy of communicating with this lovely group of non-complainers!)

So I took a brief look at the wall…and like a gift left for us all, two wonderful souls left a word, or two. Very inspiring and very wise.

See below ▼

Thank you all for being on this journey with me and please enjoy these comments, then visit the event wall and share with us….

GIVE AS MANY COMPLIMENTS AS POSSIBLE TODAY! And let us know how much fun you had!

Hello!

Why do we complain? Something is: offensive, worrisome, bothersome, perceived as a hindrance, are some of the answers I’ve gotten.

What’s your answer?

Write about this in your NO COMPLAINING journal.

As you peel that onion of an answer back a bit, you will no doubt get to a place of un-forgiveness.

Whether it’s forgiving yourself for complaining or forgiving yourself for getting into the situation you’re complaining about or forgiving yourself for being stuck in a complaining place for a long time over some issue…WHATEVER it is, you must forgive yourself for, that’s just it, you MUST forgive yourself!

A lack of forgiveness is the cancer that grows in our spirit and emotions that creates the environment for complaints.

So what can you release today? What can you forgive yourself for?

Who can you forgive today? WHO are you blaming for something? That state of blame is a complaint that took a seat in your life.

When will you open the door and say good-bye to blame?

If it were possible and you could RELEASE ALL that has you tied to a state of un-forgiveness…release all the baggage of regrets, blame, judgment, worry, agitation, complaints, etc…if you could RELEASE it all today, what could you do with the space created?

For one, I know you’d become a compliment factory!!
(How about giving five fabulous compliments today?)

So,

Consider these questions and ideas.

Reflect on your answers

Go deeper than the surface

Peel the onion back, write, pray and meditate…whatever you do to get to your source.

Get there and stay for a bit.

Have a magnificent day my wonderful friends — to commit to no complaints for 21 days makes you a VERY special group of people and I am not looking forward to the end of our connection …:-)

Wishing you Peace, Love & Light…and LIGHTNESS too!

Hello!

Thank you Arielle for the reminder of Pam’s prayer…it is lovely.

Pam Lewis shared this:

“Today I Pray

May the word freedom take on new meanings for me, not just “freedom from” my addiction of complaining, but “freedom to” overcome it. Not just freedom from the slavery of self-will, but freedom to hear and carry out the will of my Higher Power.

Today I Will Remember

Freedom from means freedom to.
(the freedom FROM complaining means the freedom TO give, see and share more love)”

This is powerful because it takes what could be a passive statement and turns it into an active statement of intent.

I am not only interested in “freedom FROM” something but I am also claiming the freedom TO DO something.

What are the things you’d like to DO more of?

What’s holding you back?

Reflect today on what might need to be released (become free from) in order to be free to DO…

THANK YOU Pam!

Have a magnificent day as you share compliments freely and refrain from complaining in thought or deed.

GoDoBe

With Love,
